I am really enjoying watching the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. MICHAEL PHELPS with 8 gold medals and 16 career medals is amazing! I am also very impressed with Nastiya Liukin and Shawn Johnson in Women's Gymnastics, not to mention all the other fantastic athletes from the US and everywhere else. I have been hoping to see some table tennis, but NBC has apparently been reluctant to show it :(

However, even in the midst of all this heated athletic competition, it is hard to forget where the Olympics are and what significance the Games' location holds. China, this year's host of the Olympic Games and home of the fastest-growing economy in the world has some serious problems. Environmentally, 3/10 most polluted cities in the world are in China, and the number one cause of death there is pollution. Socially, the problems are innumerable. China still grossly mistreats its ethnic minorities, the Tibetans, the Uyghurs, and others. Even now, it still claims Taiwan, even though it has been independent for over half of a century. Freedom of religion is virtually nonexistent, and the one-child policy forces abortions all too regularly. China turns a blind eye to the atrocities committed by the Janjaweed in Sudan and continues to blithely buy oil and sell weapons.

I love the Olympics, but it seems ignorant to just enjoy the athletics while ignoring the issues that go with it hand-in-hand.
